A geopolitical fear bid in the oil market

A geopolitical fear bid in the oil market: Sevens Report Co-Editor, Tyler Richey, Quoted in Morningstar

Oil prices lifted as data shows drop in U.S. crude inventories

Oil has “benefited from some of the risk-on money flows in other asset classes, most notably stocks, as well as still-elevated tensions between Israel and regional enemies Hamas and Hezbollah, keeping a geopolitical fear bid in the market,” wrote analysts at Sevens Report Research in a note.

What’s in Today’s Report:

  • What Makes This Stop? (Seven Indicators to Watch)
  • Chart – VIX Spikes to Pandemic Highs

There is a sense of stability in global markets this morning as the yen and VIX, two major sources of the recent volatility, are both pulling back amid easing recession fears.

Economically, German Manufacturing Orders rose a solid 3.9% vs. (E) 0.8%, helping to offset EU Retail Sales which fell -0.3% vs. (E) +0.1%.

Today, there is one economic report: International Trade (E: -$72.5B) but the data shouldn’t move markets while there are no Fed officials scheduled to speak.

Looking ahead to mid-day, the Treasury will hold a 52-Week Bill auction at 11:30 a.m. ET and a 3-Yr Note auction at 1:00 p.m. ET. Investors will be watching the auction results closely to gauge Treasury demand, and if the auctions are weak, that could see some of the recession fears from the last few sessions ease further and allow stocks to recover a good portion of the losses.

Finally, earnings season is starting to wind down but there are a few notable companies releasing results today including: UBER (E: $0.31) ahead of the bell and SMCI (E: $8.10) and ABNB (E: $0.92) after the close.

What’s in Today’s Report:

  • The Growth Scare Is Here (What It Means for Markets)
  • Weekly Market Preview:  How Far Can This Pullback Go?
  • Weekly Economic Cheat Sheet:  Important Growth Report Today

Futures are plunging globally on snowballing concerns about economic growth following Friday’s soft jobs report.

Global growth concerns are the main reason behind the stock weakness but technical factors are majorly at play, as the Nikkei fell 12% on Monday (not a typo) despite no real, negative news (other than a continued yen rally).

Economically, actual data was solid overnight as both the EU and UK Composite PMIs slightly best estimates but that’s being ignored in the global selloff.

Today the key number is the ISM Services PMI (E: 51.0) and this number needs to print back above 50 (and ideally above expectations) to help stocks stabilize.  If we see another sub-50 number or it’s worse than last month, expect growth concerns to intensify and for this selloff to worsen.

For the Fed, there is one speaker today, Daly at 5:00 p.m. ET, but she shouldn’t move markets.

What’s in Today’s Report:

  • What the FOMC Decision Means For Markets (Tailwind, For Now)
  • EIA Analysis and Oil Market Update

Futures are modestly higher on momentum from Wednesday’s rally and following decent tech earnings overnight.

META and QCOM posted solid earnings and guidance and that’s helping support the tech rebound.

Economically, the Caixin Chinese manufacturing PMI dropped to 49.8 vs. (E) 51.5, offsetting slightly better than expected numbers from the EU and UK.

Today is the busiest day of the week (and really the summer) from a calendar standpoint.  First, we get the ISM Manufacturing PMI (E: 48.8) followed by Jobless Claims (E: 236K) and Unit Labor Costs (E: 1.9%). To keep Wednesday’s rally going, markets will want to see better than expected numbers across the board to reinforce the idea of a still Goldilocks economy.

On earnings, after the close we get results from two of the most important stocks in the market via AMZN (E: $1.03) and AAPL (E: $1.24) and well as INTC (E: $0.10).

We’re staring at big catalysts

We’re staring at big catalysts: Sevens Report Editor, Tom Essaye, Quoted in Barron’s

Tech Stocks Are Sliding Ahead of Key Earnings Reports

“There was not much going on yesterday and there isn’t a ton going on today, either,” Sevens Report Research’s Tom Essaye told Barron’s. “And we’ve had sort of big moves in the market, and we’re staring at big catalysts.”

Reports from Alphabet and Tesla may have lowered the bar for Big Tech, Essaye says. On the flip side, the megacap tech stocks have run up tremendously on high expectations for growth ahead driven by artificial intelligence. That changed in July, when tech stocks started to struggle to keep up as investors rotated from the sector to underperforming small-cap names.

“Investors are kind of more in a ‘show me’ mode now than they have been in a long time with these names,” Essaye says. “They want to see better earnings before they jump back in for fear that this rotation isn’t over.”

What’s in Today’s Report:

  • Technical Levels to Watch in the Wake of the Fed
  • Jobs Report Preview

Futures are solidly higher in pre-market trade with tech and AI-focused names leading after solid AMD earnings (stock up 9%) offset mildly disappointing results from MSFT (stock down 3%) while economic data was solid overnight and investors digest the BOJ’s decision to raise rates to the highest level since 2008.

Today, focus will be on economic data early with the ADP Employment Report (E: 154K), Employment Cost Index (E: 1.0%), and Pending Home Sales (E: 1.1%) all due to be released. Healthy employment and steady wage growth numbers will be critical to see for the soft landing narrative to persist.

From there, focus will turn to the Fed with the FOMC Meeting Announcement at 2:00 p.m. ET followed by Fed Chair Powell’s Press Conference at 2:30 p.m. ET.

Earnings season also continues today with BA (-$1.68) and MA ($3.51) reporting before the open and META ($4.69), QCOM ($2.25), ALL ($0.33), and EBAY ($1.12) all due to release results after the close.

What’s in Today’s Report:

  • Is the Yen Carry Trade Become A Headwind on Markets?

Futures are seeing a solid bounce following a mostly quiet night of news as investors look ahead to (hopefully) another good inflation report.

Earnings remained broadly mixed overnight (some good, some bad) but none of the results are impacting markets.

There was no notable economic data or geo-political events overnight.

Today the focus will be on the Core PCE Price Index (E: 0.1% m/m, 2.5% y/y) and if this number is better than expected (or even dead in-line with expectations) that will remind investors that rate cuts are coming soon (September) and that should help extend this early rebound in stocks and bonds.

Earnings roll on although next week is, by far, the most important week of the season.  Reports we’re watching today include:  BMY (E: $1.64), MMM (E: $1.66) and CNC  (E: $2.42).

Oil futures appropriately popped in the wake of the release

Oil futures appropriately popped in the wake of the release: Sevens Report Co-Editor, Tyler Richey, Quoted in Morningstar

Oil prices climb as U.S. data show crude supplies down a fourth straight week

Wednesday’s EIA report was “solid and oil futures appropriately popped in the wake of the release,” said Tyler Richey, co-editor at Sevens Report Research.

Still, the “trend of strong consumer demand has faltered in July,” underscored by the fact the four-week moving average of gasoline supplied remains about 30,000 barrels per day off the early July year-to-date highs, he told MarketWatch.

Going forward, the “energy bulls will want to see more evidence of strong and persistent consumer demand in order for oil to hold above key technical support at $76.50 because recession worries are on the rise and volatility is picking up, both of which are typically headwinds for the price of oil,” said Richey.

The ultimate direction of the S&P 500 will still be determined by economic growth

The ultimate direction of the S&P 500 will still be determined by economic growth: Tom Essaye Quoted in Forbes

Stocks Slide As Major Tech Earnings Get Off To ‘Underwhelming’ Start

The U.S. will report its second-quarter gross domestic product Wednesday morning, offering a glimpse into how well the broader economy is performing. “The ultimate direction of the S&P 500 will still be determined by economic growth,” remarked Sevens Report analyst Tom Essaye in a Monday note.

The oil market began the week with a thud

The oil market began the week with a thud: Sevens Report Co-Editor, Tyler Richey, Quoted in Morningstar

Oil prices finish lower, holding ground at lowest since mid-June

“The oil market began the week with a thud [Monday], failing to stabilize after the sharp losses in the back half of last week,” said Tyler Richey, co-editor at Sevens Report Research.

Richey said last week’s significant drop in implied gasoline demand reported by the Energy Information Administration remains a “major bearish influence on the market.”

Also, from a supply standpoint, improved prospects for a victory by former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election are “price-negative for oil,” given his plans to “support production increases to increase energy independence and lower prices,” said Richey.
