Treasury Yields Are Rising Back Towards Cycle Highs

Treasury Yields Are Rising Back Towards Cycle Highs: Tom Essaye Quoted in Barron’s

Stocks Open Lower as Retail Sales, Middle East Conflict Overshadow Earnings

Sevens Report Research’s Tom Essaye noted prior to the retail sales report that markets appeared to react to news President Joe Biden will visit Israel on Wednesday.

“Treasury yields are rising back towards cycle highs on news that President Biden will travel to Israel tomorrow to try and ease tensions in the region,” Essaye wrote.

Earnings season is kicking into full gear, but so far the reports have been overshadowed by the Israel-Hamas war and economic developments.

Stocks Gain as Concerns About Conflict in Middle East Ease

Sevens Report Research’s Tom Essaye told Barron’s that reports President Joe Biden is weighing a visit to Israel have sent stocks higher and oil prices lower. WTI crude oil futures were down 0.7%, to $86.93 a barrel.

“Yields are higher but that’s likely by nervous investors reversing ‘fear based’ positions. That came last week as a result of the Israel/Hamas conflict,” Essaye wrote. “Point being, yields are rising as investors get more comfortable with the geo-political environment.”

What’s in Today’s Report:

  • CPI Preview Scenarios: Good, Bad, Ugly
  • Table: CME FedWatch Tool Shows No Additional Rate Hikes This Cycle

Stock futures are modestly lower today as ORCL offered disappointed revenue guidance after yesterday’s close. And, while economic data was largely disappointing overnight.

Economically, the German ZEW Survey’s Current Conditions Index fell to -79.4 vs. (E) -71.3. U.K. Also, wage growth rose to 8.5% vs. (E) 8.2% stoking stagflation concerns in Europe.

Domestically, the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index fell to 91.3 vs. (E) 91.7 in August. This was well below the long-term average of 98.0 pointing to deteriorating sentiment among small business owners.

Today, there are no additional economic reports today and no Fed officials are scheduled to speak which will leave equity traders focused on AAPL’s new product event. Tech shares have been driving the major stock indices so far this week (TSLA and QCOM yesterday, ORCL this morning) so any meaningful reaction in AAPL shares will likely move the broader indices as focus turns ahead to CPI tomorrow.

Finally, there is a 10-Yr T-Note auction at 1:00 p.m. ET that could move fixed-income markets and see equities reprice inflation expectations ahead of tomorrow’s widely anticipated inflation release, but no major moves are expected before tomorrow’s CPI print.

Fed Day

What’s in Today’s Report:

  • FOMC Preview (Abbreviated Version)
  • Reserve Bank of Australia Decision
  • CME FedWatch Tool – Chart

Stock futures are little changed near record highs as a sense of Fed paralysis grips the markets ahead of the FOMC announcement today.

Economic data overnight was slightly better than expected (both the Chinese PMI Composite and Eurozone Unemployment rate beat) but the market reaction was limited with the Fed in focus.

This morning, there are several fairly important economic reports to watch as the ADP Employment Report (E: 400K) kicks off jobs week before the bell, and then we get both Factory Orders (E: 0.1%) and the ISM Services Index (E: 61.9) shortly after the open. Unless there are major surprises in any of the reports, however, the market impact should be limited with the Fed looming.

After the data is released, markets are likely to quiet down ahead of the FOMC Announcement (2:00 p.m. ET) and Fed Chair Press Conference (2:30 p.m. ET) which will be the session’s main events.

Finally, earnings will continue to roll out with CVS ($1.79), MAR ($0.97), and HUM ($4.61) releasing results before the open, and ROKU ($0.06), QCOM ($2.26), and MGM (-$0.04) reporting after the close.
